In terms of hot and sunny-dry days this summer was said to be way short over here.

After reading 99%‘s great article about the art of momentum or why your ideas need speed, I first thought damn, that’s it!? “Work on your project every day. No seriously, every day.” was wheeling in my mind ~ so simple but still so hard to keep up over a long time. well, at least it sounded ridiculous to me at first sight, recalling my way of working and living during the last years. But once you look close enough it is already right there: the talk of “your ideas”.. or “his memory” talking about “oliver sacks whose memory was erased almost entirely after a severe brain infection” …so naturally… a further developed approach seemed obvious to me; find your speed!

Trying to do too much stuff at once at a way too high beat can sometimes kick you back more than it might bring you forward. So I started lookin’ at this matter in a new, fresh way. Instead of seeing it as some bothersome inability to finish off rather cool works or projects in the realms of visual creation, right now I now see it as the almost simple wrong choice of speed. Maybe even a misled sense of setting priorities: Not really sticking to one of them things but rather lose the temper or patience and most importantly the focus for each one of ‘em.

The law of momentum doesn’t only reflect in arts and constructive projects.. it rather applies to the whole time we live, love and breathe! Take a simple thing like doing (personal, not industry or money driven) sports and if you’ve ever been wondering why it takes you so damn long to get anywhere – why not concentrate on one thing, one discipline at a time? Of course to live it up all at once can give ya a good and positively exhausted feeling at the end of the week. I tried that, taking the cruiser deck to work in the mornings, dipping feet into water over lunchtime, then pop in at the skatebowl or try to ascend some decent climbing wall and finally firing up the guitar amp on the weekends for some hours of loud fun ~ alongside the every day digital work load.. all good and fine, but in retrospect things seem to take the wind out of each others sails. At the end of the month each activity was still craving for some little piece of overtime – which you really need to get better, faster, higher or just more comfortable – but I simply wasn’t able to give that back to it ’cause all the other cool stuff’s waiting to be done.

My mind was clutchin’ at a quick call to some phantasmal crazy world industry leaders to ask just one favor, let’s invent a timeslowing machine willya?!! – but the better, the real solution is easier to find in your very head: Find my own speed!

B-side: Just recently a good friend sketched me her view about people having their diverse ways of approaching this talked about momentum. It’s not only about ideas and creative brews.. but to an even greater degree simple life situations like e.g. the ir/regularity and rhythm between sleep and work, relaxation and drive. In an ideal coexistence every single person should be able to live through the day according to their own notional and bodily rhythms, ensuring good health while still functioning together as a unity of friends, aficionados or workers. “two people can have such different rhythms of living through the day and not even realize it while coacting almost 24 hours a day”…it quite struck me that I never thought of it that way. Cause there’ve been quite a bunch of good people around me that seem to be able to do a thousand things at once. And in the end, they even seem to be getting there. At long last this just backs up that you have to find your own speed, maybe a bigger and more inconvenient quest than one might think it is. So once you got it, stick to it. Just then you’re able to merge with other speedos and create cool things without bumping each others dampers, wasting a lot of time and energy to get back to that good feeling of breathing the art of momentum.
